Description
A refreshing, three-ingredient summer cocktail made with watermelon, fresh mint, and white wine. This simple sangria is perfect for parties and requires minimal prep time.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large ripe seedless watermelon (cut into bite-sized cubes, approx. 1.5 kg or 4–5 cups)
- 1 large bunch fresh mint (approx. 1 cup, loosely packed)
- 1 bottle (750ml) crisp dry white wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio)
- 2–4 tablespoons simple syrup or granulated sugar (optional, depending on watermelon sweetness)
- Ice (as needed for serving)
- Optional: Lemon or lime slices for garnish
- Optional: ½ cup vodka or gin for extra kick
Instructions
- Wash the watermelon, cut it in half and then quarters. Remove the rind and cut the flesh into bite-sized cubes. Place the cubes into a large pitcher.
- Wash the mint and pat dry. Remove leaves from stems. Clap the mint leaves between your hands to release oils, then tear them roughly and add to the pitcher with the watermelon.
- Pour the bottle of white wine over the watermelon and mint. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to submerge the ingredients.
- Taste the watermelon. If it is not sweet enough, add 2-4 tablespoons of simple syrup or sugar and stir until dissolved.
- Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
- Stir the sangria again before serving. Pour over ice in glasses, ensuring each glass gets some watermelon and mint. Garnish with lemon slices or mint sprigs if desired.
Notes
Use ripe watermelon for best flavor. Clapping the mint releases essential oils for better aroma. Do not let the sangria sit with mint for more than 24 hours as it can become bitter. Watermelon may get mushy after 2-3 days; strain if preferred. Serve chilled.
