Description
A creamy, refreshing 5-minute summer drink that combines ceremonial grade matcha with brown sugar and cold milk for a smooth, energizing latte without the coffee jitters.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 teaspoons ceremonial grade matcha powder
- 2 tablespoons hot water (approx. 175°F / 80°C)
- 1–2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 cup cold milk of choice (oat, dairy, almond, or coconut)
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Whipped cream (optional, for garnish)
- Extra brown sugar dusting (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Sift the matcha powder into a mug or small bowl to remove clumps.
- Add the hot water (not boiling) to the matcha.
- Whisk vigorously in a ‘W’ or ‘M’ motion for 30-60 seconds until frothy and smooth.
- While the matcha is still warm, stir in the brown sugar (and vanilla if using) until completely dissolved.
- Fill a highball glass or tumbler with ice cubes.
- Pour the cold milk over the ice.
- Slowly pour the concentrated matcha mixture over the milk to create layers.
- Garnish with whipped cream or a dusting of brown sugar if desired.
- Serve immediately with a straw.
Notes
Use ceremonial grade matcha for the best flavor; culinary grade is too bitter. Do not use boiling water as it burns the matcha. For a smoother texture, sift the matcha every time. You can make a brown sugar syrup ahead of time by dissolving equal parts brown sugar and hot water for faster preparation.
