Description
A simple, reliable dessert featuring a mix of tart and sweet apples layered with thick salted caramel sauce and topped with a crunchy, toasted oat crumble. This recipe balances salty and sweet flavors for a crowd-pleasing treat.
Ingredients
- 6–7 medium apples (about 3 lbs / 1.4 kg), mixed varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp, cored and sliced into ¼-inch wedges
- ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (15ml)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2g)
- 1 cup salted caramel sauce (240ml)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (90g)
- ½ cup all-purpose flour (60g)
- ½ cup packed brown sugar (100g)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (113g), cold and cubed
- ½ teaspoon flaky sea salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon until evenly coated.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, pressing down gently.
- Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the apples, spreading it into a thin, consistent layer.
- In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and flaky sea salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and work it in with fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized butter bits.
- Spread the oat topping evenly over the caramel layer without pressing down.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and caramel is bubbling at the edges. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
- Let the crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the caramel to thicken.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Use cold butter for a crunchy topping. Do not use Red Delicious apples as they turn to mush. For extra flavor, toast the oats in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes before mixing. If the caramel is too thin, simmer it to reduce. Let the crisp cool for 15 minutes to prevent runny caramel.
