Homemade Elderberry Syrup: 4 Ingredients

  • Author: Thea
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 16 servings (1 tablespoon each) 1x

Description

A simple, immune-boosting elderberry syrup made with just four ingredients: dried elderberries, water, honey, and cinnamon. This natural remedy is easy to make, delicious, and effective for supporting health during cold season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dried elderberries (about 120g)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 large cinnamon stick (or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
  • ½ cup raw honey

Instructions

  1. Combine the dried elderberries and water in a small saucepan. Stir to ensure berries are submerged.
  2. Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  3. Add the cinnamon stick and simmer for 20 minutes, allowing the water to turn deep purple and berries to burst.
  4. Turn off the heat and mash the berries against the side of the pot with a wooden spoon to release the juice. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes to cool slightly and steep.
  5. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl or measuring cup. Pour the berry mixture into the strainer and press hard with a spoon or potato masher to extract all the liquid.
  6. Let the strained liquid cool until it is lukewarm (not hot) to preserve the beneficial enzymes in the honey.
  7. Stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved. Optionally add a tablespoon of lemon juice for preservation and brightness.
  8. Pour the syrup into a clean glass jar, seal tightly, and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

Notes

Do not add honey to hot liquid as high heat destroys beneficial enzymes. Fresh elderberries contain toxins if not cooked thoroughly; dried elderberries are safer and easier to use. For a vegan version, substitute honey with maple syrup or agave. Add lemon juice to extend shelf life. Do not store at room temperature.
